The Jewish Omnivore – Latkes

Since Hanukkah is just around the corner and I’m hungry, I’m reviving my Jewish Omnivore posts.  This time, it’s all about the Latke.  Now before you start in with the whole “it’s just a hash brown” garbage, let me tell you that it’s not.  They way most people make ‘em goes something like this:

  • Lots of shredded potatoes
  • Egg
  • Chopped onions
  • Salt
  • Oil

Make ‘em into patties, throw ‘em in a pan with some oil and fry, fry, fry.  The key is making sure they don’t burn.  Burnt latke should immediately be thrown in the garbage, since they taste awful.

As for accoutrements, t you eat ‘em with applesauce.  Sour cream is for goyem.  And if you even try putting ketchup on latkes, you’re not welcome at my dinner table.
