Old School Bracketology – WPBA Tour Championships Style

Alright, alright.  I haven’t done this in a while, but since there’s a WPBA event this weekend and I haven’t written about pool (and the Dawg is sponsoring the event in a big way), it’s time for some old school bracketology.  The field is 48 instead of 64 again so the Top 16 seeds get a 1st round bye, but there’s still some good matchups. Since I haven’t done this in a while, I might be just a wee bit rusty, but hopefully some of my 1.0 and 2.0 readers will enjoy. For those of you who read but don’t watch pool, the player you’re going to know is Jeanette Lee (the black widow, that Asian lady who always is shown playing pool in the mainstream, the naked pool player from the 2010 ESPN Body issue, yada, yada). Also, ESPN doesn’t show pool live, so if you wanna watch, you’ll get to see the semis and finals on Nov. 27th. The quarterfinal matches won’t be on until early January (anyone wanting to follow the brackets can find them here). Ok… away we go!

Bracket 1: This one should be all about the GYK.  GYK and J-Bod both scored byes, so they should pull E-Dud and Smitty in the second round.  Jenn’s playing some amazing pool right now, but GYK is a monster.  I’d love to call the upset here for my buddy, but I’m seeing GYK coming out of this bracket unscathed.

Bracket 2: This should be a good one.  We’ll likely see a Helena Thornfeldt v. Line Kjorsvik matchup in the second round which is interesting on many levels, none of which I’m going to get into.  Morgan Steinman should make it past her first match to go up against Cathy Metzinger in the second round.  I’m calling a Thornfeldt v. Steinman third round with Helena making it through.

Bracket 3: Another good bracket.  The monster here is XTP, but there are some other solid players, most of which have the game to pull an upset.  Figure it to be Erica Park v. Xiaoting Pan in the third round with XTP coming out clean.

Bracket 4: This one’s a bit of a mystery, mostly because I only know two of the players (both of which got first round byes).  Figure Kelly Fisher should match up against Brittany Bryant with Kelly coming out clean.

Bracket 5: There’s likely gonna be a good matchup here in the second round between Monica Webb and Angel Paglia.  Angel should put up a good fight, but I’ve got Monica making it to the redraw.

Bracket 6: No question about this one.  Jeanette’s got a really favorable draw here and will coast through to the redraw.

Bracket 7: Interesting bracket featuring Melissa Little likely matching up against Nicole Keeney with the winner taking on Allison Fisher.  Considering the fact that Allison’s been playing lights out as of late, I can’t see her getting kicked to the loser’s side.

Bracket 8: Last bracket should feature a 3rd round matchup between Vivian Villarreal and my buddy Liz Ford.  I’m gonna play favorites here and call for Liz to pull the upset.

Lots of big names missing from this event.  Karen Corr, Jasmin Ouschan, a whole host of others.  Not surprising I guess, since there weren’t that many events this year.  Figure either XTP or GYK is gonna take this one with Jasmin not in the picture.  Ok, I’m out.  Gonna go do some more learning ‘n stuff at Pubcon.  Aaaahhh!  Gotta Go!!  Back later with the Pubcon swag report.

Interesting – final 16 match #5 – Thornfeldt vs Webb – one goes to the tv round the other gets to go for a bike ride.
